Two Faces of MAHARATNA NTPC
We all know that mainstream media like national newspapers and news channels have become managable by money and they no longer report the truth by hardwork. They publish exactly the same draft given by big corporation for creating good image in public.
Fortunately, the internet publishing has a provision for instant reader's comments , where a reality knowing sufferer can give real description. This facility is missing in newspapers and news channels.
Therefore, internet news is better positioned to know the reality.
Following example of the Maharatna PSU NTPC Ltd. proves my point. The situation is same in other so-called Navratna PSUs like Coal India , SAIL, POWERGRID etc and these survive through Media Management, while in reality , these companies are fast losing on employee satisfaction parameter , which is an alarming situation for whole country.
The experienced and fresh officers are leaving for alternate jobs and companies and assets worth trillion dollars are rusting and country is suffering worst power crisis.

At the end of every day that you spend at NTPC, you have this immense sense of satisfaction from adding another megawatt of power to the country," says Pallavi Chelluri, a 24-year-old engineer with NTPC. Best companies to work for 2012: How NTPC takes care of its employees with people-friendly policies
At the end of every day that you spend at NTPC, you have this immense sense of satisfaction from adding another megawatt of power to the country," says Pallavi Chelluri, a 24-year-old engineer with NTPC. Pallavi works with the project engineering (mechanical) department of NTPC and joined the organisation in October 2009 after completing her engineering studies.
She is very new compared to those who have spent almost three decades in
the organisation. "Being new, I did not anticipate that I'd be able to
interact with various stakeholders, including foreign players and get
this sort of exposure," she says.
The power behemoth, which has 26,000 employees across 44 locations
in the country, has launched a number of initiatives in the last one
year, which focus on making the organisation more employee-friendly. For
example, NTPC has tied up with International Management Institute and
IIT-Delhi to provide full-time executive MBA and MTech programmes to its
staff.
The company has about 3,000 executives at its mid-level
management. The collaboration with IMI will ensure that these managers
get to learn managerial skills, while the IIT programme hones their
technical skills.
Interestingly, the MBA programme initiative
came from one of the System Review Groups within NTPC. These groups have
been created to review the HR systems and processes and suggest changes
for improvement. Each System Group comprises of 3-4 HR executives who
pick up a system, find out its effectiveness through discussions with HR
and other employees, study practices of other organisations wherever
required and suggest changes based on the data and their own creative
thinking. They make presentations before HR group heads and once the
idea is approved, it becomes a policy.
Outside the work domain too, there are interesting initiatives such
as the marriage portal for employees and their wards, launched this
January. Every year NTPC takes 400-500 executive trainees who are posted
in various locations across the country. The idea is to help these
youngsters in searching for their life partners. More than 800 employees
have posted profiles on the website so far. NTPC also has a free
counseling and support programme called Snehal.
Considering the fact that NTPC employees
are often spread across remote areas and locations, the organisation
recently came out with the concept of PUPs (Providing Urban Facilities
at Projects and Stations) for employees and their family members. The
initiative aims to improve the quality of work life for both employees
and their families.
The moment an executive reaches the location,
NTPC welcomes him with a 'First Day First Show' movie screening.
Hi-tech wireless communication is also provided to make sure the
executive is connected with his family and friends despite being in a
remote location. S P Singh, director (HR), NTPC says the company intends
to keep pace with the aspirations of its people and provide the best
facilities, wherever possible.
"NTPC is like a
family. And like a family, we want to take care of each employee," he
says adding, "For instance, PUPs make sure an executive is welcomed and
is provided all facilities he needs as today's youth. Similarly, Snehal
gives an opportunity to employees to talk to a counselor. We truly
believe that half the problem is solved when you just give people a
patient listening," he says.
Second : The Real View
(The readers(employees) comments on above report)Gaurav (dadri)
these
people should come to projects and do their surveys their..then forget
the best companies..NTPC is not a company to work for..all these news
are deceiving the young graduates who join useless companies like NTPC
based on these news. when I was posted at dadri...we did not have
toilets..forget offices or air conditioners....after three years in NTPC
now i got my personal PC in office...while publishing such survey
results ET should also publish the criteria.. I would request all new
graduates that dont be fooled by these results..if you join this
company...your life will become hell...
Well
i will just ask ET to visit the mother plant of NTPC, Singrauli where
it all started, if they want to know how well this company has done over
past years. Living conditions are just pathetic. Management is
unsupportive. Employee satisfaction figure will turnout to be negative.
Connectivity is no good. What to say about hilarious medical facilities.
Docs will open their book everytime they write prescription, most of
time they dont know how to deal with illness and you will be referred to
other hospital only when you will be on verge of dying. I would really
like to write about Great HR department of this company. I haven't seen
anymore incompetent deptt then this. They are trying to develop good
transfer policy as the cmd mentioned god know for how many decades and
further upcoming decades will be spent. People working in shifts spend
their whole life in same department. Even state plant have better
policies then NTPC. And recently cmd has come with housing proposal. I
think more then half of profit they show come from their such plans of
housing welfare, loans and all. There is lack of decision makers in
company. Inefficient and non working manpower is employed in each
department. There are deptt where 5 AGM, DGM level people are
controlling over single executive level employee. HR policies are made
by corporate ppl for the corporate ppl.. And after reading interview of
cmd of company i can only laugh at his shamelessness..

I
am not crying ms shilpa.just telling the fact. These shilpa kind of lady
are very satisfied with ntpc. cause they get corporate posting easily.
and second they can marry any ntpc'ian easily and leave happily. these
lady will die and cry if sent for a week tour at projects , forget the
posting at projects :)
ntpc emp (rihand) replies to ntpc employee
well said, gls always get easy department and many times chosen by themself.
rajesh (Farakka) replies to ntpc employee
hahaha.....she
has not only option of marrying NTPCIAN, she has lot of
opportunities....mostly corporate offices of big big companies are in
NCR regions :) ;P :P
Even she can get a GOOGLian "no 1 best employer's employee"
toi
....i have the expereince of seeing a ntpc stall at one of the
exhibitions way back in 1991 in bahrain where more than 100 british and
american companies were present
the stall was managed by some senior general manager and the
presentation was pathetic
this was in 1991 ...now you say this is best company
It
is not expected from the such a renewed newspaper to indulge in these
type of activities. please declare the criteria as well. what is the
sample amount?
Can you imagine that the office of 3rd best employer don't have air
conditioner.
In how many places "First day first show" has been implemented?
Corporate
office and NCR regions will stand one of the best work to work...i have
no doubt about it, but real picture of working environment,
satisfaction can be seen in projects/stations/construction sites, and
that tells a very different but realistic story and that is far away
from the project best place to work.
Shilpa (delhi) replies to Shilpa K Reddy
See the Job position today ! Mostly people are made to sit on bench. Please dont cry !
Shilpa K Reddy replies to Shilpa
U
r true....NCR Regions n corporate offices are having excess of
manpower...everybody wants to go there and sticks there like
fevicol.....go n visit any erection site/project/station....see the
condition of livehood there...there should be more motivation to the
people placed other than corporate..but the fact that corporate people
are law and policy maker of the company and they will not make somthing
favourable for site/station...
Rihand NTPC Employee (Rihand) replies to Rihand NTPC Employee
Shold Join Google Instead!

any work other than making new rule which suck .at project location
even most basic facilities are not available even when company is making
huge profit. this survey wl misguide new joining ppl.please beware job
aspirants
ntpc employee (delhi) replies to Shilpa
If telling the truth annoys you then you are allowed to go and leave the discussion....
Amit (bihar) replies to Shilpa
Shilpa ji,
May be this was the reason people have rated NTPC as one of the best...
ntp employee (delhi) replies to Reddy

I
totally agreed with Chander, just surveying employee sitting in
corporate offices doesn't truelly represents the true face of employee's
satisfaction level. For persons posted at NCR region or corporate
offices, working condition, medical facilities, house lease,
connectivity are very good, but what about persons working at different
projects, station which are nearly disconnected from the cities and
doesnt have the basic facilities like good education of children, good
medical facilities etc.
the difference in level of satisfaction and facilities between corporate
office and project site tells the true story of so called "BEST PLACE
TO WORK".
Rihand Engineer (Bechara) (Rihand) replies to VINAY KUMAR KEETHA
As
per the Survey "Considering the fact that NTPC employees are often
spread across remote areas and locations, the organisation recently came
out with the concept of PUPs (Providing Urban Facilities at Projects
and Stations) for employees and their family members. The initiative
aims to improve the quality of work life for both employees and their
families."
I
m totally agreed with Chander's comment ...if u really want to survey
on satisfaction level of employees at NTPC , you should visit any
project/station of NTPC and ask the employees in which situation the are
living. The people at corporate are only 30% strength of employees,
they are living luxuries life and enjoying each facility of NTPC. But
the employees works at project/stations are like "Majdoor". they even
not getting prime facility of live hood like medical , education etc
etc. The employees at project/plant are getting frusteted day by day
even after working from Monday to Saturday (sometimes sunday also) .
Therefore if u really want to survey on satisfaction level of employees
please visit any project/station u will get a clear picture
I
would like to suggest Economic Times that in your article you must
mention the criteria on which you have decided any company best suited
for work. In above article you talked about NTPC .I ask have you gone to
any remote project and asked about their living condition.Projects are
the real driver of this company .Going to Delhi and asking the people
sitting in air conditioned availing the best facilities -connectivity
,medical facilities, entertainment and several others.Go and ask the
employee living in remote project running the machine, then will get the
true story.
